Investigation of the Critical Biomass of Acclimated Microbial Communities to High Ammonia Concentrations for a Successful Bioaugmentation of Biogas Anaerobic Reactors with Ammonia Inhibition

This study aimed to investigate the role of bioaugmented critical biomass that should be injected for successful bioaugmentation addressing ammonia inhibition in anaerobic reactors used biogas production. Cattle manure was as a feedstock digestion (AD). A mixed microbial culture acclimated high concentrations and culture. Different volumes were batch under toxicity levels i.e., 4 g NH4+-N L−1. The results showed injecting volume equal 65.62% total working reactor yielded best methane Specifically, this resulted production rates 196.18 mL g−1 Volatile Solids (VS) 245.88 VS after 30 60 days AD, respectively. These not significantly different from control (30d: 205.94 CH4 60d: 230.26 VS) operating without toxicity. Analysis community using 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed dominance acetoclastic methanogen members genus Methanosaeta all reactors.
